Baby Laurence – Newborn and Sibling Photoshoot Edinburgh

Hello! Welcome to my blog, I’m Karolina – an Edinburgh based newborn photographer, specialising in all white, simply posed, timeless newborn portraits. I will guess you are here, because you are consideringa newborn and sibling photoshoot in Edinburgh? Today on the blog is baby Laurence and his beautiful family! His big sister Josephine was such a star and an amazing assistant to me. I absolutely love newborn and sibling photoshoots! I believe that it is so important to capture that very beginning of one of the most special relationships these kids will share. And I have plenty of tricks to help your older child feel comfortable in front of my camera. Even if they are two years old and have a strong mind of their own!

Josephine did amazing at helping me test my camera settings and light. It’s one of many clever tricks I use to get some natural portraits of older siblings!. Just have a look at these genuine smiles!

Quick and painless newborn and sibling photos

Sometimes it takes a little while for siblings to get warmed up. But once they do, that attention does not last long! After all what toddler wants to sit around and pose for pictures? Especially when their life has just turned upside down with their sibling’s arrival. This is exactly why I aim to get through the sibling and family portrait part of the newborn photoshoot as quickly as possible. We want to capture this special relationship, but in a way that is fun and enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes siblings have no interest to pose with or around their newborn sibling, which is when posing a newborn in a basket or on a soft rug comes in handy! Sibling can then just sit nearby and I use my tricks to get them interact with their baby brother or sister.

Family and newborn photos!

My second favourite part of a newborn and sibling/family shoot must be family pictures! Capturing a growing family is so special, with everyone learning new roles and getting to know their new addition. I like to capture a mix of combinations here – mum with baby, dad with baby, mum with newborn and sibling, dad with newborn and sibling and of course some portraits that include everyone – mum, dad, sibling and newborn.

Sibling goes on an adventure

Once all the sibling and family portraits have been taken and the sibling has lost interest, I recommend arranging for the older brother or sister to be taken out for an adventure while we finish taking photos of baby only. I suggest this for a few reasons. In order to achieve those beautifully curled up, sleepy newborn poses, the temperature in the room has to be kept quite high. This is crucial to ensure the comfort of your baby. And because they are not fully dressed for the photos, they can lose their body heat quite quickly.

I’m sure you will agree that sitting in a warm room waiting around is not a dream situation for any toddler! Another reason to take the sibling away is that by that point they can quickly become overstimulated and hungry. Getting in the car and driving to get some lunch is a great way to keep them happy. Plus they get to spend some one on one time with a loved one, which is always great to fill their cup.

Newborn only portraits
