Baby Mhairi – Newborn Photography Session in Edinburgh

I was so excited to hear from my lovely client Catriona when she messaged me to let me know they are expecting their third baby and wanted once again to book their newborn photography session with me in Edinburgh! I have photographed this gorgeous family for many years now. Our relationship started back in 2017 when Catriona was first pregnant. Since having captured her first pregnancy, I have photographed this wonderful family so many times, I’m losing count! So yes, I was really happy to hear about their exciting news.

Booking a newborn photoshoot in advance allowed Catriona to relax, knowing those important first portraits will be captured. I’m so happy to be able to share some of the beautiful portraits from baby Mhairi’s newborn photoshoot that took place in my home studio in Bonnyrigg, near Edinburgh. It is a small, comfortable space, where parents and babies receive most amazing care in the home from home environment.

Sibling portraits

Baby Mhairi is so incredibly lucky to have not one, but two amazing siblings to help guide her in this life. Big brother Finlay was as proud as a big brother can be, while Iona clearly couldn’t wait for Mhairi to grow a little bit more so they can both play together. We’ve started the session with individual portraits of Finlay and Iona, and of course we had to include some funny faces amongst the formal portraits too!

Newborn and Sibling Portraits

Once Mhairi has finished feeding, we included her in the pictures with an older brother and sister too. It was so precious to witness how much love and care Finlay and Iona has for their baby sister. They were both so attentive and caring and I truly love the portraits of them together so much!

Family Portraits

Following the sibling pictures, we have included mummy and daddy too! I strongly believe that family portraits are so important and precious. They truly help capture the family story and stops the moment in time. Just look at how proud these parents are to have created such wonderful little people! And of course we had to take a funny face one too!

Mum and Dad with Baby Portraits

After we’ve finished the full family portraits, Finlay and Iona got to choose a special treat from my studio snack basket! While they indulged, we photographed little Mhairi with just mummy and daddy. I think the little babies of the family often miss out on individual pictures with their parents, as the big siblings are always around and are normally in the photos together. So I always try and take some newborn and parents only images, so that baby gets a memory of just them with mummy and daddy.

Newborn only portraits

Once the family and sibling photoshoot part was over, daddy took Iona and Finlay away for an adventure, while Mum and I stayed in the studio to capture more beautiful newborn images of baby Mhairi on her own. There is something so special about baby only portraits. They truly capture the essence of the newborn baby and allows families to remember those hazy first days and weeks a little more clearly. As the baby grows, they might keep some of the same habits, for example the way they liked to lift their hands above their head when sleeping. Or a little side smile when they first drifted off.

A simple, white blanket setup allows the focus to stay on the baby rather than props and accessories. Just have a look at these beautiful pictures – don’t you agree they are so precious?

I hope you have enjoyed reading all about baby Mhairi’s newborn photography session!
